A country with such a GDP could become third in the global ranking after the United States and China. By 2025, this figure will increase to 10.5 trillion.

The problem of cybercrime and cybersecurity may seem distant and insignificant. Who needs my data or money anyway? It’s better to rob or compromise a well-known company and not waste time on me. Thinking this way is a big mistake. Last year, Ukrainians suffered from online fraud for UAH 1 billion. This is a 26% increase compared to 2021. And it is unlikely that fraudsters will suddenly decide to stop. That’s why we must know cybersecurity and how to protect ourselves online. That’s what we’ll talk about today.

What is cybersecurity, and why is it important?

Cybersecurity is a set of measures and technologies to protect systems and data from unauthorized access, malware, and other cyber threats. The main task of cybersecurity is to detect and neutralize suspicious activity on devices and social networks in time to ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of data. It’s a bit like the wall from Game of Thrones. Only on the other side are not white walkers but hackers and fraudsters.

The question is, should ordinary people think about cybersecurity? You or someone you know has probably lost access to one of their social media accounts at least once. Or you’ve seen your friends’ posts saying that it wasn’t them asking for money in personal messages on Facebook. It also happens that on one terrific Tuesday, you get calls from various dubious companies offering you credits or some kind of prize. Just give them your card details, and you’ll be lucky.

In general, cybersecurity is essential for everyone. We put locks on our doors, use alarms, and other such things. It’s the same with information security.

Types of cybersecurity

Protection against cyber threats is needed in a wide variety of areas. Last year, Ukraine was second only to the United States regarding the number of cyberattacks on our country. Here are the main types of cybersecurity that are currently relevant to us:

Protection of critical infrastructure.

Network and application security.

Disaster recovery for business continuity.

Proper data storage (encryption, access restriction to copies, etc.).

Cloud security.

Protect mobile devices and the data stored on them.

Security of the Internet of Things.

Cybersecurity training for ordinary users and employees of various companies.

Do you remember the great moments when mobile banking or the Blizzard server was down (inspired by Diablo IV)? Cybersecurity experts work with such problems as well.

Cybersecurity on the Internet: The main types of threats

There are many types of cyber threats, and cybercriminals often combine several options to increase their chances of success. We will list some of them:

Phishing is when someone tries to lure you out of confidential information by pretending to be a reputable organization. All sorts of emails offer to click on a link, open an attachment, and provide your data. Fraudsters can, for example, disguise themselves as lotteries or charities. Phishing also comes as calls from “bank employees” when they ask for your payment card details because they have noticed a suspicious money transfer.

Malware. Auxiliary software used in cyberattacks. This software can cause damage to data or computer systems and is often distributed in email attachments or files with innocuous names. Malware includes:

Trojans;

viruses;

ransomware;

spyware;

botnets;

advertising software.

Last year, the number of ransomware attacks, which block access to systems or files of companies and individuals, increased significantly. The cybercriminal demands a ransom from the victim to restore access. Costa Rica even declared a state of emergency due to one of these attacks against government agencies.

DoS attacks. It is when a massive amount of fake traffic is sent, which overloads the system and deprives users of access. If there are several senders, it is a DDoS attack. They are often used against large corporations or government organizations. Experienced cybersecurity professionals are especially needed.

Attacks on the supply chain. They add malicious fragments to a product’s source code from a trusted software developer. It is then distributed to users and companies.

SQL injections. With their help, fraudsters gain access to databases to damage, delete, or modify them.

Cross-site scripting (XSS). Malicious scripts are added to unsecured applications and websites. When you click on a link, your browser executes these scripts, and they collect your data, install something on your device, or redirect you to a clone page.

Dictionary search. A hacker tries to guess a password using software that searches through the most common input combinations.

MITM (man-in-the-middle). A criminal intercepts data while being transmitted to the recipient without being noticed. In this way, information can be collected and replaced with other information. Such an attack becomes possible when you use, for example, an unsecured Wi-Fi network.

Social engineering. A cybercriminal gains the victim’s trust to lure out personal data: card numbers, passwords, information from documents, etc. Threats such as account blocking or requests to donate money to charitable organizations are also used. This is, instead, a method of psychological influence. It is often used in conjunction with phishing.

Typosquatting/cybersquatting. Fraudsters register a domain name similar in spelling to the address of a well-known actual website. A person can make a mistake, get to their resource, which resembles the original site in design, and enter their data, which will be stolen.

The main goals of cyberattacks include theft or forgery of information, reputational damage, blackmail, espionage, and stopping the operation of a company or service. Therefore, both business and personal data cybersecurity are essential.

Cybersecurity: where to start

It’s like the defense against the dark arts in Harry Potter – it’s better to know in advance than to wonder where the money from your card went. Here are simple cybersecurity rules that will be useful in everyday life:

Use strong passwords with a combination of random numbers, letters, and complex characters. Do not store them in the public domain and change them periodically. Please do not use one password for everything.

Remember to update your software and operating system for the latest security patches.

Install anti-virus software.

Enable two-factor authentication to create an additional layer of protection.

Be careful of unfamiliar websites, strange emails, and links. It is unlikely that you won a prize without even entering the contest.

Check what files you’re downloading.

Create copies of your data in the cloud, on an external disk, or schedule automatic backups.

Don’t be too trusting. Before sending money or personal information, ensure it’s not a scam. If a friend unexpectedly asks for something on Facebook, call them and find out if it’s them.

Share less about yourself on social media. Cybercriminals can learn a lot by visiting your page.

Don’t buy anything from unfamiliar devices or store payment information on suspicious websites.

Don’t use debit cards or cards directly linked to your account online. Instead, open a virtual card for such payments and transfer only the amount you need for a certain period.

Do not access social media or enter payment information when connected to public Wi-Fi.

Check files you’ve been storing in the cloud for a long time. Delete what you don’t need and control other people’s access to old documents you’ve opened for shared editing.

Clean up and separate your email. Create separate inboxes for online shopping, casual registrations, work, and personal correspondence. Delete emails with password recovery and confidential information.

In general, there is less gullibility and more care and critical thinking. Your cybersecurity is your responsibility. We have cyber police, but it’s better to prevent crimes.

Cybersecurity: Educating and protecting children

Children often play games, watch videos, and communicate on social media using their or their parents’ gadgets. They may publish too much information, talk to strangers, or make online purchases without realizing it. The loss of money, in this case, will seem like a trifle compared to other possible motivations of cybercriminals. To protect children, you need to:

Use anti-virus programs and parental control applications.

Monitor what your child posts on social media and enable privacy settings on their pages.

To teach children the rules of safe communication: not to tell too much about themselves, to ask for help in time, not to trust strangers, to respond correctly to suspicious offers, etc.

Build a trusting relationship so your child is not afraid to share with you what is happening to them online and in real life. Create a separate account for your child if you give them your smartphone or tablet to play on.

If you want to learn more about cybersecurity, courses can help. There are many free and paid options. You don’t need to be a Python developer, Java developer, or IT specialist to understand it.

Tips on cybersecurity on the Internet from GPT chat

We asked them to give one advice for children and one for adults.

Children:

Trust and open communication with parents or guardians. You should ask for help when encountering suspicious or uncomfortable online situations. This will help prevent illegal actions by criminals.

Adults:

Be careful with personal information such as bank details, passport information, etc.

We agree with the GPT chat. It is also essential to read news only from reliable sources and not to spread fakes. Check the fundraisers you want to join.
